Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Agency Overview

A Helping Hand (AHH) was established as a nonprofit in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1995. Completely independent, we are among the oldest and most experienced companion care agencies in the Triangle with over 20 years of dedicated service. Our nonprofit organization serves individuals 60+ years of age in Durham, Orange and northern Chatham counties. Most of our clients are over the age of 75. We also serve younger adults, 18-59, who may have a temporary or ongoing need for assistance because of an accident, illness, injury or disability.

We provide tailored, person-centered care. Our staff strives to match participants with compatible companions and find this effort creates a space for deep and meaningful connections. We build strong relationships with our companions – each support specialist is screened, trained and matched based the older adult’s needs and preferences. Combined with one of the most comprehensive training models in the industry, our companions are chosen based on a natural sensitivity to an older adult’s needs and continue to learn through supplemental trainings.

We aren’t a franchise. From early beginnings out of our founder’s home, A Helping Hand has proudly relied on community support to expand our services. In 1995, we served 21 participants. Today, we provide services to over 350 participants annually and anticipate serving many more. A Helping Hand now offers a full range of services with support from Canopy Home Care of Carol Woods. This means more older adults can maintain their independence, improve their safety, protect their dignity and benefit from social connection – all in the comfort of their own home.
