Internship Programs
A Helping Hand (AHH) has two internship programs for undergraduate students and recent graduates.
In the Pre-Health Service Learning internship, students gain direct care experience working one-on-one with older adults in the home setting and serve as patient escorts to medical appointments and outpatient procedures. Interns strengthen interpersonal and leadership skills and receive invaluable training. Former AHH pre-health interns have gone on to become doctors, nurses and other health care providers. Other areas of study for some of our past and current pre-health interns range from public health to nutrition, physical therapy, pharmacy, speech and hearing science and more.
Community Outreach interns are students of business, marketing, public relations, graphic design, technology or communications and want to gain experience in a nonprofit setting. This is an opportunity for creative individuals with writing, organizational, communication and technical skills to make a lasting impact on our organization and gain valuable career experience.
Mary G., a former intern, wrote about how much her internship with A Helping Hand meant to her:
“More than any other experience in my life it really affirmed for me that I wanted to practice medicine. All the different clients I worked with and the valuable experience I gained working in the office last summer really changed me as a person, teaching me to patient, efficient and dedicated. Medicine is truly about people and I got the opportunity to talk to people about how they felt about their doctors, their treatments, their illnesses, their death and their family’s role in it all. I will always remember their different stories and incorporate it into my own practice.”
